The music of Armenia has its origins in the Armenian Highlands, where people traditionally sang popular folk songs. Armenians have had a long tradition of folk music from the antiquity. Under Soviet leadership, Armenian folk music was taught in state-sponsored conservatoires. Instruments played include qamancha (similar to violin), kanun (dulcimer), dhol (double-headed hand drum), oud (lute), duduk, zurna, blul (ney), shvi and to a lesser degree saz. Other instruments are often used such as violin and clarinet. The duduk is Armenia's national instrument. Traditional Music Channel is for everyone who has a passion for music. Music is an expression of human creativity. UNESCO reports that among all the performing arts, music is the most universal and is found in every society, most often as an integral part of other performing art forms and other domains of intangible cultural heritage. Traditional forms of music are considered carriers of cultural heritage because they represent expressions and traditions transferred through generations of a community. The English translation of the text by Ani Toroyan (Անի Թորոյան). Armenian folk lullaby “Zartir Lao” (Զարթի՛ր լաո - Wake up, my son)- performed by Henrik Alaverdyan and Orchestra of folk instruments of Armenian Public radio. For Armenian look at this address (հայերեն): 🤍 This is a very popular song among Armenians. It is considered that the author of the song is Ashough Fahrad but there is an opinion that he just elaborated the already existing folk song. And probably this is the reason that several versions are known. In some of them it is told about Arabo, one of the leaders of fedayis, and in others he is not mentioned. In the first versions Arabo is not understood as a real historical person but a collective character of freedom fighting. The song was created in analogous with the traditional lullabies but with the opposite aim, not to make the child sleep but wake up, stand up and fight. The central person is the mother who in the name of the Armenian people tells about the miserable state of the Armenians in Moush (in some versions that of Armenians in general), Turkish persecutions, cruel taxation, oppressions and massacres because of which residents of Moush continue weeping, fleeing from their native lands and wandering in foreign countries. Then the mother calls to her son, “Wake up my son.” This is repeated at the end of every quatrain and shows that it is a fight call to all Armenians. Then she says that Turks have killed Joj (Great) Apo, i.e. Arabo, and the hope of our people is now pinned to cradles. That is, adult men who could protect their families and fellow countrymen were killed during Hamidian massacres (1894-1896), and the people’s hope is pinned to babies asleep in their cradles who are not aware of the pain and state of their people. In the last quatrain of one of the versions the mother tells the sleeping child that Sultan Abdul Hamid has assembled troops and besieged the Moush fortress. Turks want to kill them too. And she calls again, “Wake up my son,” as if saying that after the adults’ death Armenian children have no more right to peaceful sleep, they have to grow up quickly and continue their fathers’ work. The area was conquered by the Ottomans in the 16th century during the Ottoman–Safavid War (1532–1555) against their Iranian Safavid arch-rivals. Being passed on from the former to the latter, Ottoman rule over the region became only decisive after the Ottoman–Safavid War of 1623–1639.[4] The area then became known as Turkish Armenia or Ottoman Armenia. During the 19th century, the Russian Empire conquered all of Eastern Armenia from Iran,[5] and also some parts of Turkish Armenia, such as Kars. The region's Armenian population was affected during the widespread massacres of Armenians in the 1890s. The Armenians living in their ancestral lands were exterminated or deported by Turkish forces during the Armenian Genocide in 1915 and the following years. The systematic destruction of Armenian cultural heritage, which had endured over 2000 years,[6][7] is considered an example of cultural genocide.[8][9] Only assimilated and crypto-Armenians live in the area today, and some irredentist Armenians claim it as part of United Armenia. На русском языке: 🤍 This is a wedding-military dance: It may seem odd at first, how marriage and military dance are related. In the 14th century the Kingdom of Cilician Armenia fell under the Turkish rule. There began a harsh time for Armenians and Christians in general. Muslim Turks and Kurds had a villain habit of kidnapping the bride, when she was taken out from her father’s house to be taken to church. In the Ottoman Empire Christians were not allowed to have weapons. And Armenians, when the bride was taken out, as a ritual dance, danced with knives in this melody on the roofs of nearby houses to frighten the Muslims and keep them away from the bride so that there would be no desecration in the newly formed Armenian family. There was no more fear because there were a lot of armed men among wedding guests. Հայ ժողովրդական պար՝ Մուսա լեռից, «Մարտահրավեր»: Կատարում է Լոս Անջելեսի հայկական ժող. գործիքների նվագախումբը: Մշակումը, գործիքավորումը և ղեկավարումը՝ Արմեն Մանդակունյանի: Սա ավելի շատ հայտնի է «Չալմը դանգը» անվամբ, նշանակում է դանակներով (հնարանքների) ցուցադրում: Գուցե «Չալ մը դա՞նգը» - «Մի խաղացրո՛ւ դանակը»: Հարսանեկան ռազմապար է: Իսկ ի՞նչ կապ ունեն հարսանիքն ու մարտը. ուրեմն այն շրջանում, երբ Կիլիկյան Հայաստանի անկումից հետո տարածքը ենթարկվում է թուրքական տիրապետությանը, թուրքերի ու քրդերի մեջ ստոր սովորություն է եղել հայկական (կամ՝ առհասարակ քրիստոնեական) հարսանիքների ժամանակ զինված հարձակմամբ նորահարսին առևանգելու: Այս կերպ միշտ փորձել են ստորացնել, նսեմացնել քրիստոնյաներին: Եւ հայերը, հարսին տնից դուրս բերելու պահին, սկսել են մերձակա բոլոր տների տանիքներին դանակներով պարել այս մեղեդու տակ՝ ցուցադրելով տարբեր հնարանքներ ու իրենց՝ զենքը գործածելու հմտությունները՝ վախեցնելու և նորահարսից հեռու պահելու համար մահմեդականներին: «Դանգը» հենց նշանակում է «դանակ»: Այդպես են ասում նաև Գյումրիում՝ «Հացը դանգով կըտրե» կամ «Դանգըները տարավ սըրելու»: Իսկ «Չալմը» բառը հավանաբար օտարամուտ բառ է և նշանակում է ցուցադրել: Գուցե առնչություն ունի «չալել» բառի հետ, որ նշանակում է «խաղալ», «խաղացնել» կամ «նվագել»: «Հաճախ եղել են դեպքեր, երբ հարսին հանել են տնից, թուրքերը, քրդերը փախցրել են: Քանի որ հայերը շատ դեպքերում իրավունք չունեին զենք կրելու, այս եղանակով ցույց էին տալիս, թե ինչպես են տիրապետում զենքին: Պարում էին զույգ-զույգ՝ իրար դիմաց և կարծես թե միմյանց էին ցուցադրում դաշույնին տիրապետելու վարպետությունը, բազկի ուժը, առնականությունը: Սակայն իրականում՝ քրդերին ու թուրքերին էին ցույց տալիս, որպեսզի հայոց օջախներում սրբապղծություն չլիներ», - ասում է Կարին անսամբլի ղեկավար Գագիկ Գինոսյանը: Սա, թեև գեղեցիկ մշակում է, սակայն, ըստ Գագիկ Գինոսյանի, բուն պարի հետ առնչություն չունի: Իսկ «Մուսա լեռ» ազգագրական անսամբլի հիմնադիր անդամներից Սարգիս Զեթլիյանը, որն արմատներով մուսալեռցի է, այլ տեսակետ է հայտնում՝ ասելով, որ սա զուտ մարտական պար է: Նրա խոսքերով, Մուսա լեռան հայկական գյուղերում տանիքները տափակ չէին, և հնարավոր չէր դրանց վրա պարել: «Եվ երկրորդ, - ասում է Սարգիս Զեթլիյանը, - Մուսա լեռում մի քուրդ անգամ չի եղել, թուրքերն ու քրդերը մուսալեռցիներից շան պես վախեցել են, և չկա մի դեպք, դրա մասին հիշատակություն, թե մահմեդականները մուսալեռցի հարսնացուի առևանգեն: Սա ձիգ պար է, շարժումների մեջ չկա առաձգականություն: «Մուսա լեռ» անսամբլում այդ պարը պարել ենք ես և եղբայրս: «Չալմը դանգը»-ն բեմ բարձրացնելիս շատ երկար ենք պատրաստվել, քանի որ բարդ ու նաև վտանգավոր պար է»: Համադրելով այս երկու՝ առաջին հայացքից իրար հակասող տեսակետները, կարելի է եզրակացնել, որ Գագիկ Գինոսյանի բնորոշումը վերաբերում է շատ ավելի վաղ շրջանի, իսկ Սարգիս Զեթլիյանի խոսքը՝ մեզ ավելի մոտ ժամանակներին:

HOVHANNES BADALIAN (1924-2001) Hovannes Badalian was born in 1924 in the village of Shavarin near the city of Hamadan, Iran. His parents were from the ancient Armenian village of Gardabad near the city of Urmia. They came to Shavarin as refugees when the Turkish army invaded northwestern Iran. Armenians of the region, who were well aware of the 1915 Genocide of their kin in eastern Anatolia at the hands of the Turks, fled south, hoping to find safety with the British army which occupied Baghdad, Iraq, and was poised to move north. Despite hardships and uncertainties young Hovannes was able to attend an Armenian school in Baghdad until he was a teenager. In 1936 he returned to Iran where he started singing first in social gatherings and then in choirs. In Tehran, he studied and performed with maestro Hambartsum Grigorian but was not satisfied with his prospects in Iran. He wanted to achieve more, hence, when the opportunity was offered to him at age 22, Badalian left for Armenia with a group of students to study music and train his voice. In Armenia he attended the Romanos Melikian Music College and joined the Folk Music Instruments Ensemble of the Armenian Radio. His voice began to echo throughout the Diaspora and soon he was among the favorite performers of the Armenian Radio. In 1949 pressures from the Soviet regime forced him to leave the Radio Ensemble and join the Tatoul Altunian Folk Dance and Song Ensemble but five years later he returned to the Radio program where he worked until the end of his life. In 1980 he also began to teach at Komitas State Conservatory, Yerevan, Armenia. In 1957 Badalian received the title of Honored Artist of Armenia and in 1961 he earned the title of the People's Artist of Armenia. Catholicos Aram the First presented him with the Saint Mesrop Mashtots Medal and the title of Singer of All Armenians in 2000. A year later his achievements were recognized with the Movses Khorenatsi Medal from the President of the Republic of Armenia. Hovannes Badalian passed away on August 19, 2001 in Yerevan after a short illness. Throughout his life Hovannes performed on many world stages from the Middle Eastern countries to Europe, Australia, Canada, US and countless tours within the Soviet Union and Armenia. He displayed an unparalleled enthusiasm whenever and wherever he walked on the stage. He left behind his distinctive school of singing a delightful collection of Armenian folk and patriotic songs and a living legacy in the minds of his contemporaries.
