The cerebrospinal fluid or CSF is the liquid that bathes the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord). The CSF ensures: - The protection of the central nervous system against mechanical shocks and vibrations. - it plays an important role in the regulation of intracranial pressure. - It participates in the cerebral metabolic processes by regulating the exchange of substances. and, provides many other functions as well. The CSF circulates in two different compartments: - The first is the inner brain ependymal cavities or ventricles, - the second is the compartment surrounding the central nervous system, it corresponds to the sub-arachnoid space. The CSF is secreted by the choroid plexus: clusters of capillary blood vessels located in the ventricular system. The ventricular system consists of four ventricles connected by many channels. It is connected to the central canal of the spinal cord. There are two lateral ventricles, occupying the center of the cerebral hemispheres. Both are connected to the third ventricle at the center of the diencephalon by the foramina of Monro. The third ventricle is connected to the fourth ventricle in the brainstem by the aqueduct of Sylvius. The CSF will leave the fourth ventricle through the foramen of Magendie to fill the sub-arachnoid space between the pia mater and the arachnoid. The CSF is then absorbed at the top of the skull by the arachnoid granulations of Pakioni.

The Cerebrospinal Fluid and the Fluid Nature of Consciousness Mauro Zappaterra, Director of Regenerative Medicine and Clinical Research Certain traditions believe there is a ‘step-down’ process or condensation that occurs from the Source to our physical self. As this energy condenses it becomes more differentiated and visible to the human eye as physical form. As this condensation occurs, certain traditions believe that the initial ‘step’ into the body occurs at the third eye, or the brow center. At this same location is the third ventricle, a space in the middle of the brain filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Amazingly, this same fluid space, bordered by the pituitary gland in front and the pineal gland in back, has been referred to as the ‘Crystal Palace’ and the ‘Cave of Brahma.’ The CSF is home to many neurotransmitters and signaling molecules providing an elaborate range of biological functions. The CSF utilizes volume transmission and its information can potentially be quickly dispersed and simultaneously target key brain regulatory centers due to its fluid nature. Interestingly, at the back of the third ventricle, in the middle of the brain, the CSF condenses and aggregates into a thread-like structure known as Reissner’s fiber that extends the entire length of the central canal of the spinal cord. The precise role of this fiber is unknown. Could it have a role in conveying vibratory signals from the fluid itself? In addition, the CSF contains the ‘spirit molecule’ DMT that is released by the pineal gland. Nisargadatta Maharaj said, “fluids come together and the ‘I Am’ appears.” The CSF may therefore serve as a vehicle for immediate signaling to major control centers of the brain and may be significant in regulating consciousness and the sense of ‘I Am’. Let us explore our fluid nature, our fluid body, visit the 'Cave of Brahma' and go with the flow.

FLOW OF CEREBROSPINAL FLUID 1. Cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF, is produced by the choroid plexus in the lateral ventricles of the brain. From the lateral ventricles the CSF flows through the interventricular foramina to enter the third ventricle. 2, Here, a second choroid plexus produces more CSF. 3. Next, the CSF passes through the mesencephalic aqueduct of the midbrain, and into the fourth ventricle, where further CSF is added by a third choroid plexus. From here, it passes through the median aperture and lateral apertures into the subarachnoid space. 4. Finally, the CSF circulates down the central canal of the spinal cord and around the brain and spinal cord in the subarachnoid space. CSF is reabsorbed into dural blood through arachnoid villi; small projections of arachnoid mater which protrude into the dural venous sinuses, particularly the superior sagittal sinus. Pressure of CSF is kept constant by the rate of its formation equaling the rate of its absorption. CSF functions as a protective barrier against chemical and mechanical damage, as well as helping with the exchange of nutrients and waste substances between nervous tissue and the blood.

Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast: Cerebrospinal fluid leaks are commonly misdiagnosed

Cerebrospinal fluid is the clear fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. It cushions the brain and spinal cord from injury, delivers nutrients and acts as a waste removal system for the brain. A cerebrospinal fluid leak occurs when fluid escapes through a small tear or hole in the outermost layer of tissue that surrounds the brain or the spinal cord. Leaks can occur in the skull or at any point along the spinal column. Because headache is a common symptom, patients are often misdiagnosed or mistreated for migraines. "About 85% of patients with a cerebrospinal fluid leak at the level of the spine will have an orthostatic headache — one that gets worse when they stand up and better when they lie down," says Dr. Jeremy Cutsforth-Gregory, a Mayo Clinic neurologist. Once properly diagnosed, a blood patch procedure is often an effective treatment for spinal cerebral spinal fluid leaks. The patient's own blood is injected into the spinal canal, and the blood clot that forms can stop the leak. In other patients, surgery or a novel procedure called paraspinal vein embolization may be more appropriate. On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Cutsforth-Gregory discusses diagnosing and treating spinal cerebrospinal fluid leaks. _ FOR THE PUBLIC: More health and medical news on the Mayo Clinic News Network. 🤍 FOR THE MEDIA ONLY: Register at 🤍 to access clean and nat sound versions of this video on the Mayo Clinic News Network. 🤍

Connie Deline and Dr. Wouter Schievink discuss the symptoms of Cerebrospinal Fluid CSF Leaks. The most common symptom of a CSF leak is a severe positional headache. Deline, explains that the symptoms would lessen when lying down and intensify when sitting upright. Her pain would be localized to the back of her head at the base of the skull. Dr. Schievink says that little is known about how common CSF leaks are which are only diagnosed in patients with significant symptoms while many patients go undiagnosed. Kendra Jackson spent the last few years trying to get relief for her chronically runny nose. But everywhere she went, she was told it was because of allergies. "I just knew it wasn't right," Kendra said. "I would wake up in the morning and my pillows, nightgown and sheets would be soaked. I could barely sleep and had horrible headaches. There were times it was so bad I considered suicide." But in March of 2018, she paid a visit to the ENT team at Nebraska Medicine. It was Carla Schneider, PA, who suspected it was much more than allergies. "Just based on her description of the amount of drainage she was having I knew that wasn’t normal and wasn’t typical for any type of allergic rhinitis," said Carla. " We keep it on the list for things to always consider. Even though it’s not very common, it is something that happens." A cerebrospinal fluid leak is dangerous for several reasons, one of them being the possibility of bacteria entering the brain and causing something potentially dangerous like meningitis. Once the diagnosis was confirmed, rhinologist Christie Barnes, MD, and neurosurgeon Dan Surdell, MD, patched the leak using some of Jackson's own abdominal tissue during a brief surgery. Doctors told Jackson she was losing more than 16 ounces of fluid a day because of the leak. Today, the leak has been patched and Jackson is feeling much better, despite some nagging headaches that are lingering from the issue. Dr. Surdell is still seeing Kendra to help her get rid of that issue. "I feel so much better than I have in the last two-and-a-half years," said Jackson. "I can't thank everyone here enough for what they did to help."
