This video dives into how the CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) works. We will go into the actual theory behind CDP and will give live demonstrations of how this works in real time. We will also be learning how to disable CDP to give our network more security. Brief CDP summary: CDP is a Layer 2 or Data-Link layer protocol, it is enabled by default and the interfaces where CDP is enabled on will send out CDP packets on an interval timer typically every 60 seconds. These packets typically contain information such as ports the device connects onto, hostnames, version numbers of the OS and model numbers. CDP details are stored in a neighbor table that will contain all the data. Details are stored until the hold timer runs out and no new CDP packet is received which is typically every 180 seconds. But what exactly is this CDP thing that everyone’s talking about? Well, to bring you up-to-speed, the CDP market is ramping up. In 2018, market revenue climbed to $740m, up 50% from the previous year, and is estimated to exceed $1 billion in 2019. And the number of CDP platforms is picking up pace too. Salesforce recently announced that their Customer 360 platform will now be a CDP, click then Adobe jumped in to say they’re getting one too. And not to be outdone, Oracle also bragged that they’ve enlisted the help of Accenture and Capgemini to help them figure out this CDP thing. Well, the compounding challenge that marketing teams face today is that they want to deliver connected experiences to their audiences. You see, consumers now expect more than a personalised experience, instead they want every brand interaction to be a connected experience click that matches their actions and behaviours, based on in-the-moment data. For example, like immediately triggering emails based on a customers recent website engagement or an in-store purchase. And to do this, you need know exactly how they’re interacting with your channels and content. But the barrier marketers are facing is data. While the data exists, it’s very fragmented and the systems that manage this data were actually built for a different era. Customer data resides in CRM, purchase data in a point-of-sale system, web data in another system, and so on. And these number of data sources are increasing. In 2017 the median number of data sources used by marketing organisations was 10, then 12 in 2018 and 13 in 2019. Now some marketers enlist the help of their IT team to extract this data from these disparate data sources, while others import all this data into their digital marketing platform for segmentation, but these approaches are fundamentally flawed, as: Complex segmentation requires SQL modelling which calls for considerable expertise and effort, and inherently lacks flexibility. The end result is a series of large, near-time, schema-dependent datasets that can’t easily adapt without serious effort and skills. In fact, in a recent study, 81% of IT leaders say that point-to-point integration has created some of the biggest headaches they’ve seen. But a CDP is designed with exactly these problems in mind. It integrates disparate data sources by using complex matching algorithms to unify identifiers from different data sets to create a single customer view. Then it goes onto break down the barriers of traditional segmentation approaches by offering tools that enable marketers to build complex segmentation without code, then immediately surface insights (like audience size) after segmentation, showing how audiences overlap, and most importantly, provide actionable reporting, so individuals in an audience can immediately receive communication or be injected into a customer journey. And this is critical, click as in the new marketing funnel, click leads can enter at any stage, so audiences need to be highly pliable. In summary, a CDP enables data integration, orchestration, segmentation and of course that elusive single customer view — and puts all this back in the hands of marketers — right where it belongs.
How CDP Works All Cisco devices transmit CDP packets periodically (default time interval value is 60 seconds though this is adjustable). These packets advertise a time-to-live (TTL) value in seconds, which indicates the number of seconds that the packet must be retained before it can be discarded (default value is 180 seconds). CDP packets are sent with a time-to-live value that is nonzero after an interface is enabled and With a time-to-live value of zero immediately before an interface is down. This provides quick state discovery. All Cisco devices receive CDP packets, process them and cache the information in the packet. Cisco devices never forward a CDP packet. Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) is a Cisco proprietary Layer 2 protocol that is used to gather information about Cisco devices which share the same data link. The device sends periodic CDP advertisements to connected devices. CDP can be used as a network discovery tool to determine the information about the neighboring devices. This information gathered from CDP can help build a logical topology of a network when documentation is missing or lacking in detail. CDP can assist in network design decisions, troubleshooting, and making changes to equipment. On Cisco devices, CDP is enabled by default. To verify the status of CDP and display information about CDP, enter the show cdp command. To enable CDP globally for all the supported interfaces on the device, enter cdp run in the global configuration mode. To enable CDP on the specific interface, enter the cdp enable command. To verify the status of CDP and display a list of neighbors, use the show cdp neighbors command in the privileged EXEC mode. The show cdp neighbors command provides helpful information about each CDP neighbor device, including device identifiers, port identifier, capabilities list, and platform.
