Devotees bathe in the waters of Agni Theertham, off the beach east of the temple. Rameswaram is a municipality in the #ramanathapuram of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is on #pambanisland separated from mainland India by the pamban channel and is about 40 kilometres from Mannar Island, Sri Lanka. It is in the Gulf of Mannar, at the tip of the Indian peninsula. Pamban Island, also known as Rameswaram Island, is connected to mainland India by the #pambanbridge. Rameswaram is the terminus of the railway line from Chennai and Madurai. Together with Varanasi, it is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus and is part of the #chardham pilgrimage. #ramanathaswamytemple The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the most notable historic landmark of the town. Located in the centre of town, Ramanathaswamy Temple is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva. The temple is one of the 12 Jyothirlinga shrines, where Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlinga meaning "pillar of light". The temple in its current structure was built during the 12th century by Pandya Dynasty. The temple has the longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India. The breadth of these columned corridors varies from 17 to 21 feet with a height of 25 feet. Each pillar is sculpted in Nayak style as in Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. Temple Tanks There are 64 Theerthas or Theerthams (holy water bodies) in and around Rameswaram. According to the skanda purana, twenty-four of them are important. Of the 24, 14 are in the form of tanks and wells within the precincts of the temple. Bathing in these tanks is a major aspect of the pilgrimage to Rameswaram and is considered equivalent to penance. Twenty-two of the tanks are within the Ramanathaswamy Temple. The foremost one is called Agni Theertham, the sea (Bay of Nangal). The beach is said to be opened till 6PM, the beach is not deep for atleast 50 Meters which makes it safe for children and family, but beware of jelly fishes though. Pamban Bridge - A beautiful sea bride built in 1940, before that boats were the only mode of transport for reaching rameshwaram and this bridge is one of the largest sea bridge in india, Watching the train cross the pamban bridge is bliss. Kunthukal Beach - Another cool beach in rameshwaram with a boardwalk and boat trip to Kurusadai / Krusadai island is been taken here based on the weather, Vivekananda memorial and marine museum is also located here. Villoondi Theertham - A Mysterious Well in Rameshwaram. It is Believed to be Made by Lord Rama to Quench The Thirst of Sita by Dipping his Bow in The Sea. The Strange and Mystery thing is The Water From The Well is Not at All Salty. A Temple is also located nearby. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Memorial - An memorial for our beloved Abdul Kalam sir after his burial, well maintained and entry is fee but photography is not allowed inside. Ramar Patham - A small hill temple of Lord Rama and footprints which is believed to be Rama's foot print with some view at the top. Arulmigu Ramanathaswamy Temple - The major reason for people to visit rameswaram, temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and said to be more than thousand year old with lot of wells, the devotees gets drenched on all those water from the wells. Agni Theertham / Sun Rise Point - This place is along the beach and is believed to wash away all the sins and a great place for sunrise. We started off from the resort on the next day early in the morning. crossing Pamban Bridge we moved on to the southeastern tip of India - Dhanushkodi. Situated on the Pamban Island, Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu is a major Hindu pilgrimage famous for its history and temples and is home to one of the 12 jyotirlingas, the Ramanathswamy Temple. Rameswaram is situated on a small island in the Gulf of Mannar and is connected to the mainland by road and railway bridges. The Ramanathaswamy Temple is about the most important landmark here at Rameswaram, besides the house of the late president APJ Abdul Kalam. The temple boasts of having the longest corridor in Asia and is second only to Kashi Vishwanath temple. Rameswaram also finds mention in the Ramayana and is believed to be the place from where Rams built a bridge to Sri Lanka to rescue Sita from her abductor, Ravana. Rameswaram, along with Dwarka, Puri and Badrinath, forms the pious four destinations of the Chaar Dhaam pilgrimage. The town became the first port of arrival for thousands of Tamils fleeing Sri Lanka at the height of civil war in the island nation. Beaches located near Rameswaram are ideal to unwind. Dhanushkodi, where Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean, offers magnificent seascapes. Locals call Bay of Bengal as Penn Kadal or the female sea and the Indian Ocean as the Aaan Kadal or the male sea. Jeeps and four-wheel drives operated by locals are the only option to visit the land’s end. If interested, jump on a boat to view the splendid corals. However, do inspect the condition of the boats before taking a ride. There are several accommodation options in Rameswaram. One can find many budget and mid-range hotels. Most of the hotels are located near the temples. One can also opt to stay at Hotel Tamil Nadu run by the state tourism department. Other than these, there are four government guest houses. There are many multi-cuisine restaurants in Rameswaram. Most of the restaurants pre-dominantly serve South Indian cuisine. One can also opt to eat good food at reasonable prices at the Marwadi Bhojanalaya which is one of the subsidized restaurants run for charity. Visiting Rameshwaram is incomplete without bathing at 22 Theerthams (or holy tanks). Start from Agni Theertham at the sea situated near the temple. As per legend, Lord Rama had requested sea goddess to remain calm here so the sea is unusually calm here. Each of the tanks has a special significance in history and devotees associate varying beliefs with each of the tanks. If you plan to do this, it is a must to wear traditional clothes and ensure that you leave all electronic items where you are staying. You may need the services of a guide to help you do this in the right order. It is customary to donate the wet clothes to the needy after the bath. All the 22 wells are freshwater wells and are hardly saline. Keep an hour aside to complete this ritual. The temple, located in Rameswaram, is considered a holy pilgrimage site for Shaivites, Vaishnavites and Smarthas. Mythological accounts depict the presiding deity, the Lingam of Ramanathaswamy (Shiva), as having been established and worshiped by Rama, before he crossed his bridge to the present-day island of Sri Lanka. The temple in its current shape is believed to have been built during the 17th century, while Fergusson believes the small vimana in the west corridor belongs to the 11th or 12th centuries.The temple is said to have been sanctioned for construction by King Kizhavan Sethupathi or Raghunatha Kilavan. The contribution of the Jaffna kings of Pandya Dynasty to the temple was considerable. King Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan (1380–1410 CE) shipped stone blocks from Koneswaram temple, Trincomalee to renovate the temple's sanctum sanctorum. Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan's successor Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan (Pararacacekaran V), a trustee at Rameswaram who also oversaw structural development of this temple and the promotion of Saivite beliefs donated part of his revenue to Koneswaram. Especially to be remembered are the immense sums that were spent during the tenure of Pradani Muthirulappa Pillai towards the restoration of the Pagodas which were falling into ruins and the splendid Chockattan Mantapam or the cloistered precincts of the temple at Rameswaram that he finally completed. The rulers of Sri Lanka also contributed to the temple; Parakrama Bahu (1153–1186 CE) was involved in the construction of the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.Also, Sri Lankan king Nissanka Malla, contributed to the temple's development by making donations and sending workers. Pappakudi a village was donated as a grant to Rameshwaram Temple and one Deva Venkala Perumal Ramanathar in (1667 CE) by Perumal Servaikaran Son of Sokkappan Servaikarar who belongs to Pandiyur. They are local Chieftain under Tirumalai Regunatha Sethupathy Thevar Rein in Ramnad Kingdom. The grant details are published by Government Press, Madras Presidency for Archeological Survey of India in 1885. Along with Pappakudi, Anandur and Urasur villages are also donated to Rameshwaram Temple. These Villages falls under Melaimakani Seermai province of Radhanallur Division The temple is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites and has several historical references about it.
