Snow leopards, or "ghosts of the mountains" as they are known in some parts of the world, have earned an almost mythical status for their stealthiness and camouflage skills. The big cats are so perfectly adapted to their harsh mountainous habitat that even spotting them against a rocky backdrop can be near impossible. However, dramatic footage that recently surfaced from India’s Himalayas reveals that even these most elusive cats occasionally show themselves (and sometimes even put on a spectacular hunting display). Snow leopards are found in central and south Asia's harsh, snowy, and mountainous alpine environments. The optimum habitat for snow leopards is dismal, dangerous, cold, and desolate — not everyone's the notion of a pleasant place to live. Have you ever seen a snow leopard hunt in the mountains? Do you think a dog could take on a snow leopard? If you want to know, keep watching, as we look at the beautiful snow leopard in action. ► Subscribe For New Videos! ► 🤍 Watch our “15 Hyenas And Vultures Enjoying Meals Of Dead Animals” video here: 🤍 Watch our “15 Angry Animal Mothers Fighting To Save Their Babies” video here: 🤍 Watch our “Top Favorite Animals Bears Like To Prey On And How They Hunt Them” video here:🤍 Cubs With Mother At Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, a female snow leopard baby was delivered to first-time mom Sombra and six-time dad Amiga. She's now over eight pounds and has begun to engage with her mother in a more playful manner. Snow leopards are rare, so it’s always nice to see a mom play with her newborn cub. Watch how she jumps over her cub and keeps the little guy on guard. This feisty five-and-a-half-month-old snow leopard cub wants to play with his mom, but she has another thing on her mind, like relaxing and probably taking a nap. These felines are absolutely gorgeous. Snow leopards are masters of disguise and skilled climbers, making them ideal for mountain survival. There are only around 4,000 snow leopards left in the wild, and they are more endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, retaliatory killing, and climate change. This mom has three cubs and checks out how she carries one of them in her mouth. I almost thought it was a dead kill she was carrying. These cubs are beautiful, but the only problem is they are not seen very often because they keep hiding in their cave. When you watch the way they behave, you just want to grab them and squeeze them in your arms. Snow Leopard Vs Yak/Dzo Adult snow leopards are required to kill once every ten days. As he gets closer, he blends into the scenery. The yak smells him, but despite their excellent vision, they can't see him. He zeroes in on a youngster who has wandered off. The calf's mother rushes in, risking her own life to save her offspring. The cat is clinging to life. The mother charges to shake the predator-free. A wingman appears to be assisting the mother. The snow leopard slings away, frustrated by the spectacular escape. As the snow leopard hunts under the cover of darkness. His prize is a young dzo. However, at nearly twice its weight, the snow leopard cannot carry it very far. He eats what he can before returning to his rocky home. It's impossible to hide a kill in these open mountains. Another super predator, a wolf, is drawn to the commotion. In the Himalayas, a gray wolf weighs about the same as a cat, but wolves rarely travel alone. The pair could easily overpower the lone cat. The snow leopard stands motionless, unable to do anything as he watches the wolves devour their prey. A red fox begins to devour whatever it can as soon as they leave. But it's difficult to eat a meal in peace when you could easily become the meal. It's time for the cat to take back his prey from the scavenger. But there are more scavengers in the wings...magpies. The snow leopard has already suffered enough losses, so he is not in the mood to share. The obnoxious magpies don't let him rest. The cat takes the best meat and walks away, leaving the cleanup crew to squabble over the leftovers. This snow leopard tries to kidnap a baby yak, but it doesn't anticipate the adult yaks defending the young yak. Even though the cat has the calf by the neck, its mother continues to attack the snow leopard until it releases the calf and flees. National Documentaries Channel Thanks for watching! Comment anything as ud like! Silent Roar Searching for the Snow Leopard [Full Nature Wildlife Documentary] For several reasons, my favorite piece of footage is the courtship and mating sequence. It was my fantasy objective for shoot five. Silent Roar Searching for the Snow Leopard [Full Nature Wildlife Documentary] [The film was shot over nine shoots.] I researched all I could about mating strategies of big cats, especially the so-called solitary ones. I needed this comparative approach, since wild snow leopard mating had never been recorded. Many Ladakhi villagers believe that snow leopard females go down to the rivers and mate with male otters, to produce regular snow leopard cubs! So it was a pretty safe bet that even they hadn’t observed mating. Silent Roar Searching for the Snow Leopard [Full Nature Wildlife Documentary] That morning I was slowly scanning the area as usual when another team member spotted two snow leopards together, very high up on the skyline of the cliff. I rushed to a filming position and threw the camera kit together. I had the cats covered, and already in those first few minutes I could see that they were courting. Silent Roar Searching for the Snow Leopard [Full Nature Wildlife Documentary] The next nine hours were glorious: will they, won’t they? I didn’t take my eye off the viewfinder once. Just before dusk this wonderful team of people made the first-ever recorded observation of a wild snow leopard mating. I’m still deeply moved whenever I watch the footage, both for its content and for its process. After working so hard together over three years and two films, we had just become a part of snow leopard history. Not only that, we’ve cleared up that tale of otters and snow leopards! Silent Roar Searching for the Snow Leopard [Full Nature Wildlife Documentary] At the time there was no explanation for his illness. I delayed my return to Ladakh, the film location, as much as possible. But as soon as Taiga had stabilized and was released from the hospital I returned to location. Leaving your six-day-old baby for the next two months tears a piece out of you that never quite grows back, made worse when that baby is ill. After shoot two was over I spent a beautiful month with Taiga, now two and a half months old, on location in New Zealand for another film I was shooting. All seemed well. But 36 hours before I was due to return to Ladakh for shoot three, Taiga was diagnosed with an incredibly rare congenital disability called septo-optic dysplasia, a midline brain abnormality. Stunned and heartbroken, I delayed my return to Ladakh as long as I could, and then had to leave to film the seasonal events that simply wouldn’t wait. Best HD Documentary Wild life Shoot three was one of the most difficult I’ve ever done. I had a satellite telephone with me (for safety reasons, and for communication with my co-producer in England, Hugh Miles), so I was able to make brief weekly calls to my then-wife back in Australia. Each call was emotionally battering as I’d learn of yet another devastating aspect of Taiga’s condition. He was pronounced totally blind; his beautiful blue eyes had no optic nerve connecting them to his brain. My passion to film snow leopards suddenly seemed absurd: Here I was filming an animal to show 80 million strangers around the world, and I was powerless to show my own baby son anything. I had to draw on every technique of psychological discipline I knew of to get through it. But I had to make those weekly calls, no matter how heartbreaking. In a way, shoots four, five, and six were even harder as we became more informed about just how fragile Taiga was.

Winner of Best Film - Nature's Best Photography Asia 2020. Synopsis: Set foot into the fairytale winterscapes of the wild Indian Himalayas. Featuring intimate glimpses into the wildlife of Spiti Valley, this natural history tale of survival chronicles the last days in the extraordinary life of a Snow Leopard. It unveils the various struggles that it must relentlessly battle every day, including the biggest one by mankind - climate change. Story behind the film: It all began as a still photography expedition, a much needed break from my ‘job’ as a commercial filmmaker. It took 3 days of traveling by flight and driving through precariously narrow Himalayan roads to reach Kibber from Mumbai. Feb 27th 2020 was my first day in the field. I had never walked through shin-deep snow before, let alone walking and slipping down icy waterfalls. There were sightings of a mother Snow Leopard with three cubs but she was long gone when I arrived. On Feb 28th, I saw my very first Snow Leopard in the wild; he was in hunting mode. Moments later, he cartwheeled to the bottom with a large Ibex. I switched from stills and filmed as much of the cat’s behaviour as I possibly could, not knowing how and where I would use the footage. 4 days later, the Snow Leopard was forced to abandon the carcass as it froze solid in the stream it plunged into. I witnessed another hunting attempt; this time, he failed. Nightfall came by and my journey had ended. On my return home, the villagers told me about yet another hunting attempt. Driven by starvation, the old cat miscalculated his footing and fell to his death. Moved by the tragic news, I revisited my footage and was compelled to tell the story survival of this incredible Snow Leopard and the many challenges the species faces, every single day. This film was never intended to be, it was born from extraordinary experiences and has urged me to dedicate my life to continue telling stories of our natural world with the hope of re-humanizing people and preserving it. Location: Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary, Lahaul and Spiti district, Himachal Pradesh. Local Porter: DK. Writer, Director & Producer: Kenneth Lawrence. Narrator: Nazneen Madan. Music Director: Advait Nemlekar. Colourist: Amit Kumar, Aum Creations. Cinematographer, Editor & Sound Design: Kenneth Lawrence. Special thanks to Jayanth Sharma for the expert sightings. Snow Leopard of the Himalaya: most magnificent cat

09.08.2019

The mysterious Ounce of the Himalaya The Himalaya. Many things to many people. Mt. Everest to some. Pilgrimage to others. The Yeti or the Abominable Snowman to many. Bhutan and Nepal to yet others. Few outside India associate the high peaks of the Himalaya with India. And yet more Himalayan geography falls in India than outside it. After catching her breath, she narrows down her interest on a pair of Himalayan Blue Sheep or Bharal that are grazing on dried winter grasses atop a cliffy landscape, after separating them from the herd. A calculated chase follows. She is lapping at the heels of the Bharal male. She takes one leap and catches hold of the Blue Sheep. But soon hard ground gives way beneath both of them. Whether she has calculated the distance to the edge of the cliff or this development takes her by surprise, they are both off the cliff's edge, and spiral downwards together. The Bharal is in the tight hold of the female Ounce or Snow Leopard. Talk about the aerial righting reflex of cats. This is an extreme case... The Snow Leopard twists and turns her body in the air, anticipating the rude fall at the end of the approximately four hundred foot fall off the cliff! And when the two do fall together, the Snow Leopard cleverly cushions her own fall over that of the Blue Sheep. And in that moment of extreme gravity-fuelled impact, the Bharal gets a chance to break away and escape. But the hungry and desperate Snow Leopardess has not gone through this extreme fall for nothing. She lunges forward and grabs the Bharal back in the grasp of her paws and mouth. They fall together several hundred more feet, bumping and thumping their way down over the rocks, taking on huge impact and lacerations. Finally the flight and fall end, and the triumphant Snow Leopard has a subdued Bharal within its grasp. She is injured and bruised but nothing that a few days of rest will not take care of. This is surely one of the most fantastic natural history sequences ever recorded in the annals of wildlife filmmaking! This is the FIRST EVER sequence of a wild Snow Leopard actually making a kill on camera, and what fabulous gymnastics and callisthenics to boot! Do note the behaviour that you might otherwise miss. It allows us to do even more justice to this fascinating footage, especially as it’s been shot in 4K. There is a lot going on here that we don’t notice at first glance. The way the Bharal still has the strength to attempt to pull itself away from the Snow Leopard, just after the first stage of the fall, and the manner in which the dexterous big cat is able to maneuver its body and right itself mid-flight, to help it survive. This footage tells us a lot about the two animals in terms of behaviour and physiology. What drama from the Himalaya! Not exactly another day in the life of a Snow Leopard, but this young female Snow Leopard demonstrates to us the extreme conditions that occasionally challenge its very harsh life in the high mountains. And yet this fascinating animal continues its unique way of life in the high Himalaya, far from the prying gaze of human beings. The following season, in the winter of 2019, we returned to her cliffy rock faces and found her faring well and back in hunting action. We distantly followed her to check on her condition. She has no lasting effect of that fall and is dexterous and adept as ever. Hopefully, she will have cubs this year. This footage is part of the broadcast stock footage archive of Wilderness Films India Ltd., the largest collection of HD imagery from South Asia. We visited a family of snow leopards and immediately fell in love with the little, pudgy cubs. For more fluffy awesomeness, paw at this link: 🤍 There's nothing better than watching newborn animals curiously explore the world around them. How can your eyes not be glued to all the digging, pouncing, sniffing, falling, and those wide eyes that are too big for their heads. So you can only imagine what it was like when we made friends with a few baby snow leopards in Germany—they were like kittens on special steroids that multiply cuddleability by a factor of 10. The pudgy furballs love nothing more than to go on mini adventures in their playground at Magdeburg Zoo, and not even their mother was able to curb their curious mischievousness. We saw them nudge around a soccer ball, dip their huge, snowshoe-like paws into bowls of water, and tinkle on the clinic floor (somehow even that was cute). To top it off they are the official symbol of the Girl Scout Association of Kyrgyzstan. We bet they really like their cookies! The researchers tracked the cubs' mother for several months using a GPS system in her collar. They entered the den to examine the cubs after the mother left, presumably to go on a hunt. Mother-cub bonding happens immediately after birth … o there’s no risk that she’ll abandon the cubs after human contact. The researchers tagged the cubs with small chips and also plan to track them through camera traps set up throughout the area. Pakistan Snow Leopard & Ecosystem Program - PSLEP - aims to protect the iconic Snow leopard and its fragile ecosystem by adopting a landscape approach to conservation and management. This will be achieved by ensuring that the key biodiversity areas, buffer zones, corridors and areas outside traditional protected areas that are critically important for conservation of endangered snow leopard and associated species and habitats are managed in tandem with the sustainable use of these resources and improvements in livelihoods of local communities living in this region.
